Nkumba is poised to win the UFL title

Nkumba University will be aiming to win their maiden Pepsi University Football League (UFL) championship this weekend when they take on Uganda Christian University (UCU) at the MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo.

Just as the 2023/24 UFL season has been, the final is expected to be a highly tense one. However, the major subplot in this game is going to have the Nkumba goalkeeper, Andrew Obwana and whether he can stop the striking duo of UCU that has Geoffrey Gagganga (6 goals) and Isaac Ofoyrwoth (5 goals) over the entire game.

Obwana has been an instrumental player to Nkumba enroute the final, keeping five clean sheets. In the semifinals, Obwana’s exploits, owed largely to his tall body frame, kept at bay the threat that was posed by Kampala University (KU), helping his team win the two-legged encounter 2-1.

It was a mark of sheer determination from coach Sulaiman Bbosa’s charges, as they exorcised the ghosts of 2017, when they lost the final to KU 2-3.

But now, they still have another hurdle to beat, which is to win their first-ever trophy in this competition. And that is something that Nkumba must do against a team that they lost to in the quarter-finals last year, UCU. On the other hand, UCU come into this final not only with a sharp attack to boast about. But in 2019, they won this league.

Therefore, they are quite fancied because of the pedigree they have built up, and no doubt, they will be buoyed by that history, and raring to go.

Yet, UCU can only underestimate Nkumba at their peril. With striker Irivine Mamur, scorer of five goals thus far, they have a big goal threat to supplement Obwana in goal, to ensure that the UFL trophy heads to Entebbe, finally!
