Five people have been buried alive in gold pits in Chepuwar mining site in Lokales sub-county, Amudat district.

The five miners died on Friday as they were entering the pits to dig out the gold.

Micheal Longole, the Karamoja regional police spokesperson identified the deceased as Eden Tamwenya, 54, Enock Ochieng, 24, Samuel Rotich, 28, Samuel Simatia, 17,  and Moses Tamwenya, 24.

They are all residents of Cheptakol village, in Lokales sub-county, Amudat district.Longole explains that the miners, attached to Reuben Miners, were trapped in the pit when it caved in yet they did not have any protective gear. Efforts by the police and the area residents to rescue them yielded no results until they breathed their last.

Betty Chepal, one of the miners in the area, told URN that many miners have lost their lives due to a lack of protective gear. Similarly,  Joyce Chelimo, another gold miner said currently many mothers and children are suffering from skin disease due to a lack of protective gear, yet this is the only work available for them to sustain their families.

Francis Kiyonga, the former district chairperson of Amudat said the government needs to put in place measures for protecting artisanal miners.

One would think that all the profits and tax revenue that the rich and government benefit from mining such expensive minerals, would go a long way in trying to create a safe and healthy infrastructure in which workers can work and prosper.

Such an African national trade that does not put back money earned into such a dangerous business as this one, is going to continue to kill such miserable and poor African workers for many years to come and counting.

Indeed Uganda is a lower middle income economy. You just have to visit areas like Karamoja, Busoga, Teso, Mbale, many parts of Buganda, Acholi, West Nile to witness the fruits of a middle income economy.

Well done Museveni and NRA/NRM. Families of those people who died in the makeshift mine or the many who have died while trying eke a living must be thanking you for your vision and hard work.

All I can say is that, this is nothing but modern slavery by the rich exploiters.
Where do the proceeds obtained after selling all the gold go to and who enriches himself after selling all the gold?

I am sure, not even the government and no one should use the name of Uganda as the owner of the gold deposit. Otherwise, the responsible government officials would have put in place all the necessary facilities and protective gears for the labourers used in the exploitation of the gold deposits.

I am not ready to be fed on lies. But let it be clearly stated that the deposits belong to those hard core crooks who have ruined the country and reduced Ugandans to 21st century slaves.

You can accumulate everything in this world, our dear sycophates. But be sure of one thing : when the hour comes for the Almighty to ask you to pay for all the evil caused on this earth, I wonder if you will bribe him with all the wealth accumulated so as to find a place of rest in his house!

Thanks.

Africans, "the people", MUST wake up & ensure they are serves, especially as African resources ensure public/social services in developed world!

There is no way Africans will be served by demon rulers who own natural resources & hold people hostage, unless UNITED people make their stand as to how they are governed!

kabayekka, thanks.

China benefits from S. Sudan oil, yet S. Sudanese are migrating to Europe/UK/USA, leaving their useless rulers to enjoy life with their oil money!

Museveni & Useless Acholi tribal leader wanted to give Amuruland to China to farm & send food to China!

French president already talked to Museveni to ensure Total controls Uganda oil, but did he talk about how Ugandans live?

Museveni will either end up owning Uganda or selling it to foreigners!

That is why I don't go near gold mine pits nor leave any of my family members go near gold mine pits.

But Even people can be killed somewhere else and dumped in pits falsely claiming the goldmine collapsed, evil politicians
